After 14 years as head coach and over 20 years with the organization, the Denver Broncos have fired coach Mike Shanahan. I gotta admit that off all the firings this offseason this is the one that I didn’t see coming. With all the success he has had there, the two Super Bowls and the nine winning seasons, seven playoff appearances and three conference championships in 14 years you would think he would get a little more leeway. I mean it is true that the Broncos underperformed this season with respect to the talent they have on their team and they also did squander what looked to be a pretty promising season.

After 14 seasons Shanahan is out as head coach and president of football operations for the Denver Broncos.
You can’t blame it all on Shanahan though, they had more injuries than a little bit, both on offense and defense. I mean they probably hold the record for most RB’s ever to be put on the IR in one season which essentially made the Broncos run game non-existent. With that happening, teams could bump and double team WR Brandon Marshall all they wanted as the suprising rookie WR Eddie Royal faded late in the season. It would have been a tough set of circumstances for any coach to overcome, but I think he Broncos should have given him one more season. In the end, the blame always falls to the coach though and it was no different here. For Shanahan, this is a chance to prioritize and probably get a fresh start in some place new, can anyone say New York Jets, San Diego Chargers or perhaps another underachieving them. There is no doubt that he will be back coaching another NFL team soon if he wants and if I was the Broncos I would hope they aren’t in the AFC.
